Leipzig University of Telecommunications (Hochschule für Telekommunikation Leipzig, HfTL)

The SPECOM / ICR 2018 Conferences will take place at Leipzig University of Telecommunications (in German: “Hochschule für Telekommunikation Leipzig”, HfT Leipzig), a private university of applied sciences funded by Deutsche Telekom, and at its neighbouring HTWK University on the same campus (due to some delayed building activities at HfTL). The HfTL university has a small and beautiful campus for about 1,400 students with nicely renovated buildings. It is located in the middle of a popular student & nightlife district in the south of Leipzig, 14-16 minutes by tram 10 or tram 11 from Leipzig main station (“Leipzig Hauptbahnhof”) and close to the tram & bus station “Connewitz, Kreuz”.

Leipzig

Leipzig is a city in the federal state Saxony with about 590,000 inhabitants. It is located about 190 kilometers (120 miles) south-west of Berlin and about 120 kilometers (75 miles) north-west of Dresden. Leipzig is a German city with a long history. It was first documented in 1015 and has been an important trade city since at least the time of the Holy Roman Empire. Leipzig is the city of many famous German musicians and composers – it is known as the city of Bach, Mendelssohn, and Wagner.

In October 1989, after prayers for peace at St. Nicholas Church, established in 1983 as part of the peace movement, the Monday demonstrations started as the most prominent mass protest against the East German regime. Since the reunification of Germany, Leipzig has undergone significant change with the restoration of many historical buildings, the demolition of others, and the development of a modern transport infrastructure. Nowadays, Leipzig is an economic center in eastern Germany.

In December 2013, according to a study by market research institution GfK, Leipzig was ranked as the most livable city in Germany and is one of the three European cities with the highest quality of living (after Groningen and Kraków). In 2010, Leipzig was included in the top 10 cities to visit by the New York Times.

Transport

By airplane

Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) is located between the cities of Halle and Leipzig. It is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away from the town center of Leipzig. With respect to the number of passengers, the airport is only on rank 14 in Germany (however, it is the second largest German airport for freight traffic). There are direct flights from and to Frankfurt a.M. (FRA), Munich (MUC), Moscow-Vnukovo (VKO), Amsterdam (AMS), Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Zurich (ZRH), London-Stansted (STN) and many other cities.

The commuter train S5 or S5X takes you from LEJ airport to the central train station of Leipzig in 19 minutes (single ticket EUR 4.60, which will is also valid in the tram to the venue station “Connewitz Kreuz” afterwards).

By train or bus

Sometimes it will be more convenient or cheaper to arrive at other German airports, namely Berlin-Tegel (TXL), Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF), Frankfurt (FRA) or Dresden (DRS), and to use the train or coach to Leipzig. From Frankfurt airport there is a direct inter-city express (ICE) connection to Leipzig (duration: 3h22). From the Berlin and Dresden airports it will take about 1h45 by train(s) incl. ICE to the Leipzig main station. Tickets can be booked via: https://www.bahn.com/en/

The central train station of Leipzig is located in the center of Leipzig and was nicely renovated and modernized after the German reunification. With respect to floor area, the central station is the world's largest railway station handling 120,000 passengers per day on average. It has 24 platforms housed in six iron train sheds, a multi-level concourse with towering stone arches, and a 293 meter-long facade. It is not just a railway station – it is also a huge shopping mall open even on Sundays.

Coaches to/from Leipzig are slower but usually cheaper than the train connections. On shorter distances (Berlin-Leipzig, Dresden-Leipzig), it can be useful to also check the bus connections. Some start directly at the airports, and Flixbus coaches have free internet. The Central European market is dominated by the bus company Flixbus. https://www.flixbus.com/
